From Portland
The direct route leaves the metro through northwest Oregon and follows the river toward Astoria. Friday traffic, rain, and fog can extend the drive beyond the usual estimate.
From the Oregon Coast
This is the natural route from Cannon Beach, Tillamook, and coastal towns. Add time for summer congestion around beach communities.
From Seattle
The inland approach reaches US 30 through Longview. A coastward route through southwest Washington can cross the Astoria-Megler Bridge but is slower and more exposed.
Astoria-Megler Bridge
The bridge carries US 101 across the Columbia. Check current road and weather conditions when high wind, fog, or storms are in the forecast.
Airports
Portland International Airport has the broadest flight and rental-car options. Astoria Regional Airport does not replace a normal commercial-airport arrival for most visitors.
Without a car
The NorthWest route provides scheduled intercity service between Portland and Astoria. Check the live timetable, stop details, and connections before building a car-free arrival around it.
In town
The riverfront and central blocks are walkable. Keep the car for the Astoria Column, Fort Stevens, and lodging at the outer edges.
Arrival judgment
Choose a walkable dinner and short riverfront loop after check-in. Save the maritime museum, Column, and Fort Stevens for daylight; Astoria's brick downtown, breweries, cafés, and a short riverfront walk fit the remaining daylight.
